Road deaths under the influence of alcohol are all too common, both in Portugal and around the world. For this reason, it may not be long before Apple finds a way to prevent its users from driving while intoxicated.
The company has already filed a patent that proves that it is possible to give cards in this regard.
Driving under the influence of alcohol is very common, as are accidents resulting from this offense which many fake. Aware of this, companies like Apple intend to minimize this problem by transforming themselves into user consciousness.
In February 2021, Apple filed a patent that would bring an infrared spectrometer to iPhones and Apple Watch. By combining data on normal blood alcohol and ammonia levels, these sensors could work like a personal breathalyzer.
In addition to testing the user’s breath, comparing it to a database, the application could also guarantee other functions, in case the result is not conclusive. These functions would include puzzles to assess dexterity, games testing reaction time and basic calculations, which would determine if the user was drunk.
If it comes to fruition, this feature could be present in Apple’s CarKey, which replaces the car key. Now the patent reports on the messages the user may see on the screen if they try to operate the car while intoxicated.
Although promising, there has been no official confirmation from Apple. For this reason, it is not known whether the warnings generated by the new functionality can be, for example, deactivated or ignored, or whether the driver will actually be prevented from entering the vehicle.
Anyway, if the patent is to become a real service, we will soon be able to know it and Apple will be able to guarantee that its users, at least, do not drive while intoxicated.
