How to deactivate Samsung Free and revert to Google Discover?

On your Samsung Galaxy smartphone, you may have noticed that when you swipe right, it is no longer Google Discover that is displayed but Samsung Free. But what is this mobile application? What exactly is it for? And finally, how to deactivate Samsung Free and switch back to Google Discover.

Summary:

What is Samsung Free?

Samsung Free is a pre-installed content source on Galaxy smartphones. The app is also installed with every phone update on devices running One UI version 3 or higher.

At the end of 2020, the app replaced Samsung Daily – which itself replaced the Bixby Home app – and works similarly to the Google Discover service, offering a variety of media content from many sources.

The app offers news feeds (provided by upday, formerly Taboola), podcast episodes, games and even live-streamed shows – using the free Samsung TV Plus service in select countries. Like the Google alternative, the app can customize suggestions based on your preferences, but the feature is optional.

It is not possible to manually add feeds to the app, such as NextPit’s RSS feeds.

How to Disable Samsung Free Feature

The Samsung Free app is pre-installed by the manufacturer and cannot be uninstalled – at least without rooting the phone – or even disabled in the app’s settings menu. So the only option is to disable the feature, which can be done by following these steps:

  1. Long press on your home screen
  2. Scroll right
  3. Flip the switch at the top of the page to Off

The same steps can be followed to replace Samsung Free with Google Discover, if preferred.

That’s it for our tip for the day. Have you ever (knowingly) used the Samsung Free app? Or, like me, you have disabled this feature?
