Some Teslas are struggling to properly cool their Ryzen APUs…

Overheating problems would affect around 130,000 of the brand’s vehicles.

In June 2021, Tesla formalized its choice to use AMD Ryzen Embedded APUs to support the infotainment system of its Model S and X. A little less than a year later, Electrek tells us that the firm Elon Musk has recalled 130,000 vehicles (129,960 to be exact) due to a processor overheating issue, which could cause the infotainment system to slow down or even shut down.

The Teslas concerned are certain Model S from 2021 and 2022, a few Model X SUVs as well as Model 3 and Model Y cuvée 2022. This inconvenience spares older vehicles with less powerful Intel Atom processors.

A shared loop between the batteries and the APU?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration explained that this overheating problem could appear under two conditions: when the vehicle is in motion and in the battery pre-conditioning phase (a phase during which the battery heats up in order to allow fast charging at a station) or simply stationary during fast charging. The cooling system is then mainly used by the car batteries; thus, it becomes unable to reduce the temperature of the Ryzen APU. This suggests a liquid cooling loop shared by both the batteries and the CPU.

Don’t worry if you have a recent Tesla, it won’t suddenly catch fire. Simply, as the company wrote in a memo, a system that “Lag or restarting may prevent the center display from displaying the rear view camera image, gear selection, windshield visibility control settings and warning lights, increasing the accident risk ». Fortunately, these malfunctions do not affect the vehicle’s primary functions such as steering, acceleration or braking.

Anyway, this problem can be corrected by software updates. Tesla started rolling them out on May 3.
